Colegrove Park Elementary School

North Adams, MA

The Conte School is a cultural and architectural landmark in the heart of North Adams. Jones Whitsett Architects proposed the conversion of the original high school, built in 1916, into a combined elementary and middle school, as an alternative to building a new school on the city’s outskirts. The renovation salvages community memories and embodied energy while simultaneously re-establishing an important cultural locus within the city. The educational advantages of the school's "old bones" are its large classrooms, high ceilings and grand windows. Colegrove Park Elementary was awarded a 2016 Massachusetts Historic Commission Preservation Award for excellence in renovation and rehabilitation.
